Prescott Hungry Kids Project

No child should spend the weekend worrying about food.

The Prescott Hungry Kids Project helps provide weekend food support for Prescott Unified School District students facing food insecurity at home. Through partnerships with schools, volunteers, donors, and community organizations, students receive bags filled with easy-to-prepare food items to help bridge the gap between school meals on Friday and breakfast on Monday.

The program serves Prescott Unified School District students only and works closely with school staff who help identify students and families in need with care and confidentiality.

WHY IT MATTERS

For many students, school breakfast and lunch are the most dependable meals of the week. When school closes for the weekend, some children face empty cupboards and uncertainty at home.

Food insecurity impacts more than hunger. It affects:

  • Student concentration
  • Attendance
  • Academic performance
  • Behavior
  • Emotional well-being

The Prescott Hungry Kids Project helps students return to school on Monday better prepared to learn.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Each week, volunteers help pack and distribute food bags filled with child-friendly, shelf-stable items such as:

  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Soup and pasta
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Oatmeal and cereal
  • Fruit cups and applesauce
  • Granola bars and snacks

School staff discreetly place food bags into the hands of students before weekends and school breaks.

Community Support Makes It Possible

The Prescott Hungry Kids Project is supported through donations, grants, volunteer support, and community partnerships coordinated through the Prescott Unified School District Education Foundation.

An estate gift dedicated to the program has helped strengthen long-term sustainability, but ongoing community support remains important as student needs continue throughout the year.

Every contribution helps ensure students in Prescott Unified School District have access to food when school is not in session.

Together, our community is helping local students focus on learning instead of hunger.
